About
Tribals of Jharkhand state have immensely contributed to the Independence of our country led by Bhagwan Birsa Munda, Sido Murmu and Kanhu Murm. Tribals were the deprived section of society and attracted the attention of policymakers, planners, and social scientists. All these factors led to increased tribal studies to accelerate tribal development that recognises the tribal communities and cultures. Against this background, a focused “Birsa Munda Centre for Tribal Affairs” (BMCTA) has been established at IIM Ranchi to develop recommendations and activities for developing tribal communities.
Vision
To continue the legacy of Birsa Munda as a people’s leader, one which is innovative and responsive to the needs of a tribal nation, communities, and individuals.
Mission
Achieve excellence in academic quality, scholarly engagement, and service through research and training in tribal affairs.
The centre aims to serve the following purposes:
- To organise training programs to encourage skill development, and entrepreneurial activities by the tribal groups/communities for income generation and improved quality of life.
- To strengthen the centre through the collaborative network and partnerships with institutions, especially for undertaking research and conducting training related to income generation and livelihood programmes; and to support entrepreneurial activities.
- To evolve as a responsive centre for the tribal community for any issue significantly impacting the tribal community.
IIM Ranchi has signed an MoU under Birsa Munda Center for Tribal Affairs and six community-based organisations, namely Vikas Bharti, Friends of Tribal Society, Asian Institute of Sustainable Development, Association for Social and Human Awareness and Socio-Economic Education Development Society, and Gram.
The students of IIM Ranchi are encouraged to become familiar with the rural society and the social problems of Jharkhand. With this, IIM Ranchi aspires to develop socially sensitive citizens who think not only about themselves but also take responsibility towards society.

Projects
Unnat Bharat Abhiyan
IIM Ranchi is working in 5 villages under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan. Various programs have been organised in these villages. IIM Ranchi performed livelihood-oriented work in these villages, under which the leaf plates made from the leaves of the Sal tree, value-added products of medicinal plants and other forest produce-based businesses were in focus. Village-level surveys and meetings in these villages for the same initiative have been done, and soon there will be a community-based enterprise centre established in these villages.
Pradhanmantri Van Dhan Vikas Yojana – Entrepreneurship and Skill Development Program
Pradhan Mantri Van Dhan Yojana is an initiative of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and TRIFED. The entrepreneurship and Skill Development Program (ESDP) is one of the essential components of the scheme. IIM Ranchi is an ESDP training partner in Jharkhand for 39 VDVKs in the first phase. IIM Ranchi has developed training modules for tribal women to facilitate business development through leadership and skill development. IIM Ranchi, in association with Jharkhand State Livelihood Promotion Society (JSLPS) and Jharkhand TRIFED, is conducting this training at the VDVK level for a more significant impact.
