The Race to Plan It All

Table of Contents

Friendly discretion: I am not a writer. If not for Bhavesh’s “nomination”, I would not be doing this. Writing is not my strong suit, but let’s give this a shot:

This is not to list out my experiences. Let’s meet and have long, tiring conversations if you want to know about them.

This post is about that one thing I learnt and what every MBA/IPMAT aspirant should know:

I will be a 20-year-old graduate with big dreams in a scary world in a few months. Looking back at the past three years, I remember the one question that my juniors have asked: “Specialisation kaunsi choose krein?

Honestly, no one really knows. I can’t be asked to decide the next decade of my life right after joining college. How does anyone make that decision?

Curiosity as a Compass

Before coming to IIM Ranchi, I knew that marketing was what I wanted to do. After I came here, I realised that marketing is a much bigger field than I had ever expected. My understanding and my planning all went down the drain. Here I was, back at square one, with no idea what to do.

This was when I decided to explore myself. I did three internships simultaneously (to those wondering, yes, it was hell). I worked in almost every domain, from marketing to HR & strategy development and project management. I still don’t know what exactly “my domain” is. But I have way more clarity on how to make that decision. Spoiler alert: The answer lies in choice elimination. But you can’t eliminate something you don’t know anything about. At least you shouldn’t.

Who decides your future?

No one, not even you. The future comes one day at a time. So, live it one day at a time. Don’t figure everything out, just know your dreams, your capabilities and your limits. The one lesson I will always keep from my college days is knowing that you don’t need to know everything. Go through life, be curious, but never put yourself in a box. Explore all avenues, but don’t be hasty in your decisions.

Learn to enjoy the little things in life

The best part about being in an IIM for an undergraduate degree is the countless opportunities within your grasp. Please make use of them. Don’t be the average BBA grad, be an IIM grad. Use the tag (shamelessly) and get those internships.

Believe in Yourself

To the future IPMAT prospect and the upcoming batches, I hope you let your dedication speak for you and join our community of crazy, good people.

To my juniors, never falter and never lose hope. You are here while countless others are not. You have what it takes to create a lasting impact. Don’t decide your life at this early stage; be curious and explore. Life’s fun when you take it slow. So, learn to have fun.

To my seniors who guided me through these years and my batchmates who gave me so many experiences to cherish, I hope you live the life you aspire to and succeed in all your ventures.

Peer learning goes to a whole new level at an IIM

I will leave you with a question: If everyone knows everything, who learns?

That’s it from me. Peace out, folks!
